My Chennai, Singara Chennai

Chennai city is home to about 10 million people, which makes it one of the most crowded cities in India. Like most megacities chennai faces host of issues, Poverty, medical facilities, drinking water, electricity, drainage etc. On top of that, Chennai is the least green city in India, only a measly 4.5% is vegetated, rest is all concrete and that’s is scary truth. Luckily, the civic authorities have finally woken up to the situation, over the last 2 years the mayor and a popular ruling party leader [ thanks to their numerous trips to Bejjing, Seoul, Singapore, Shanghai etc ] have brought things under their watch. Many a parks have come up, Adyar poonga’s first phase was completed, a botancial park was thrown open, Marina beach is getting a face lift and finally an enthusiastic project of planting 1 lakh saplings is underway. The project is expected to increase the green cover of Chennai by at least 5%, not enough however, a decent start.

Chennai has historically sported a trashy image for its lack of hygiene. This is slowly set to change thanks to some ambitious plans laid out by the civic authorities. What’s good is that these plans are translating into reality. Slow start however, the government deserves a big thumbs up on this.
