India claims “The mother of all games”

After all the hype and bold statements, Afridi was finally grounded. He rightly summed it up. ” I think they [India] played better than us “.

A game which was billed as ” The mother of all games” was surprisingly played in an excellent spirit, no one was out of control, no emotional outbursts, no unparliamentary language,  no overtly aggressive body language. In fact there were lot of pleasant sights, maybe it was the pressure of playing in front of the two Prime Ministers, I really appreciate this form of Cricket, truly a gentlemen’s game last night, it was played with zest and zeal, hats off to both the teams for taking the match to a new level.

Right, if you look at the match. I would say it went as per the script. India were clear favorites. We were expected to win and we did.

First Innings, Indian batsmen were supposed to do well, they did, however, they lost the plot after an exciting start but, a scratchy 85 by Sachin [he was gifted as many as 4 lives by the generous Pakistani fielders] and a crucial 36 from Raina, took us to a respectable 260. Pakistan has always produced outstanding bowlers and today was Wahab Riaz’s day, the in swinging yorker which got Yuvraj was one of the best deliveries of the tournament, I’m sure he will have a bright career. Pakistani fielding was horrendous however, that was expected. I also felt towards the end, Pakistani bowler’s inability to wipe out the Indian tail proved extremely costly for them. Full marks to Indian batsmen for putting up a decent total, which EoD proved matching winning.

For this game, India had opted for Ashish instead of Ashwin, experts thought it was a suicidal move. But, you see when Dhoni makes a decision, he hardly gets it wrong. Nehra bowled a remarkable line and pouched important wickets. but, for me the pick of the bowlers were Yuvraj and Munaf, those two guys built the pressure and got the big wickets. In between all the tension, one batsman was in his zone – ‘block everything’ zone. Misbah’s exasperating batting method ruined everything for Pakistan, he seemed so disinterested in the middle. It was a shocking performance from Misbah. Anyways, credit to Indian bowlers for keeping it simple, a victory well earned.

I particularly liked Afridi’s humble post match interview, he was gracious in defeat. He knows his team was beaten by a better team. No shame in being overpowered by a quality team. They tried their best however, they have to wait another 4 years to look for a possible revenge.

As of India, this win will certainly rank among the top 5 all time ODI victories. Nothing comes close to beating Pakistan at this level. Incredible win for Incredible India. But, I don’t want to go over board because team India is yet to win their most important game since 1983, the finals of ICC Cricket world cup 2011. This is what matters the most. However, full credit to team India on successfully claiming ” The mother of all games “. As of Pakistan, they lost the game yet won the hearts of millions of Indian fans by their pleasant demeanor and sporty attitude.

i still want to cry 😦 and u know 😦 ppl going on and on how gracious afridi was…makes it worse 😦 what i did find heartening was. yeterday i had gone to watch a screening.. even after the match, EVERY SINGLE one of the pakistanis still said it was “ok”…we got this far, we shud be grateful. there was no rioting as typically happens after a screening….everyone was still cheering on afridi and no one wanted to kill him.

Awwwhhh.. I guess it must be extremely hard for your people to accept this defeat however, this was no white wash, you team played extremely well, gave a tough fight. As everyone has been saying- Team Pakistan has exceeded expectation.

I’m now officially a fan of Shahid Afridi, I was expecting him to react badly and go crazy on the ground but, he charmed his way through. EoD India won but, I would remember this game for a long time for Pakistan’s gentleness and humility. Cheers to Pakistan.

thats the only thing that helps me salvage the situation…..despite it all, alls set to give afridi a heros welcome back in karachi. misbah and younis had better hide tho 😀 ab samajh aya why we all love afridi so much?? despite his players not doing well, he still backed them, had it been any other captain kamran akmal would have been axed ages ago…hes a small man..with a HUGE heart…and thats why everyone loves him. whatever stupidities he does, everyone forgives him simply cuz he is shahid afridi.

ps. now that im getting over the heartbreak: congratulations.

            Sweet of you ^^

I guess if Team Pakistan works on fielding and discovers few good batsmen like Umar Akmal, they might turn world beaters. I thought had Umar stayed for few more overs, the result of the game would have been different. He is such an exciting player. Misbah and Younis should make a exit from the ODI side, they seem to have lost the plot completely.

It was a great match. Riaz’s bowling was spot on and for a moment he culd have caused real trouble. But India seemed to me to be more disciplined in bowling and the field when 260 was a target that could have been caught. I thought the spirit of the game was excellent. It was good to see players from both sides exchanging banter and smiles sometimes on the field. A great victory for the spirit of cricket and sport. Sri Lanka on Saturday………..are you ready for Malinga (the strangest bowling action on the planet )?

      • Narendra 3:15 pm on March 31, 2011 Permalink | Reply

India & Sri Lanka have played like 20-30 matches in the last 2 years..to be honest, it’s touch irritating to see them play yet again. Now that, we have reached finals, there will be many more bilateral series coming up..it’s going to be such a pain for the fans.

Malinga, Mendis, Herath all had their highs and lows against India, so there won’t be any element of surprise, Sachin n Yuvraj usually do very well against SL, they will be key from our side, Dilshan and Sanga for SL. I’m sure this one wil be a close contest unlike like the last 3 editions. Hoping for the best.

It’s the half way stage at the ICC…

It’s the half way stage at the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011. A quick look at the current standings and performances.

Group A: Before the tournament started, very few would have imagined Pakistan leading the group at the half way mark. Thanks to few outstanding performances by Afridi, they are at the top and undefeated. Australia is a close second, going on expected lines, they would be ruing the bad weather against Sri Lanka which forced them to share points. Sri Lanka on the other hand needs to lift its game, they were shocked by Pakistan. New Zealand is also going strong. Minnows- Kenya, Zimbabwe & Canada haven’t caused much of threat, barring the Pak-Canada game they were mercilessly beaten .

Group B: This is where all the action is taking place. A tied game, couple of upsets ( One was huge ) and few mind blowing centuries. Lot of excitement. Despite poor show by the bowlers, India is aptly topping the group [ The other teams have been highly inconsistent ]. Indian thumped Bangladesh, played out a high scoring tie against England [ that game gave me a mild heart attack 😛 ] and yesterday took out a remarkable bunch of Irishmen. Meantime, South Africa which was expected to top the table started very well but, crashed in yesterday’s game [ no surprise there, only SA can pull off such miracles 😀 ]. England on the other side is playing see-saw. Indies are rocking. Bangladesh are reduced to cats. Netherlands did their bit however, it’s Ireland which set the stage on fire, they produced a thriller against England slamming record runs batting second.

So, at the half way stage it looks like rivals India and Pakistan hold an edge with Australia a close second, trying desperately to hold on their ” World Champions” title. Next couple of weeks may change the table. We’re all set for many more surprises and loads of top class Cricket. I just saw a news piece, it said India has been the most misbehaving team, lot of on-off field altercations, not a happy sight. It’s surprising to see Aussies [ who are largely considered the masters of sledging ] not getting into any ugly scene. Cricket is labeled as ‘ Gentlemen’s game ‘ and I hope teams act more responsibly, especially the hosts.

Trust you enjoying the tournament as well, do write your feedback. In case you aren’t following the world cup, take some time out and cheer your teams, believe me it’s fun.
