    Know about Earthquakes and Tsunamis

Recent Quake and Tsunami has brought these two words back to limelight. But, very few really understand what exactly happens or rather what causes them. Here’s a short 2 minute clip done by BBC. Hope this is simple enough

Thanks for sharing, Narendra. That was very informative…scary, but informative.

It’s a very informative video with nice effects!
Though I don’t like quakes and tsunamis

What about the sky, clouds and other things like gravitational force. What effect does these have on quakes and tsunamis… when we talk and hear about these things, only the earth crust, so called plates do get a mention…

    Ring of Fire – II

Earlier this evening, Dad and I were watching the latest videos of Japan’s recent devastation. There was a news capsule on a possible nuclear meltdown. Scientists are saying that if there is blast, its effect will go beyond Japan. Scary,Very Scary.

We both were discussing in general and then I had my Ripley’s believe it or not moment – ” Japan, Philippines, Indonesia and all other pacific islands are actually volcanic formations, it’s not LAND, just lava “. 😐

At some point of the conversation, I asked  “what are the options for Japan”. Out came a reply which I least expected ”

All the pacific nations should vacate and move to America, Australia and Canada, if possible India and China should accommodate few millions”. Me, totally baffled. I had this are-you-kidding-me look on my face. He continued ” Seismic activity in the pacific is likely to intensify over the decades, if they want to save their people, best would to be to migrate”. I didn’t buy that immediately, a little thought and I realized it makes complete sense. Canada, Australia has huge uninhabited land, they can comfortably accommodate the whole population  of Japan, Philippines, fiji and other Pacific Islands. Dad foresees this idea coming into play sooner than later. Japan is in the verge of a nuclear disaster, where do you think all the people would go? Here’s a possible scenario – USA owes close to $1 trillion to Japan [ Long term trade debt ], so you see, they might ask for piece of land instead of cash. Americans on the other hand will wipe out 20% of their debt and get access to the best engineering brains. [ How’s that for an idea? a modern form of colonization 😛 ]

hmmm… Dont know. If the Americans/ Canadian/ Australians having vast stretch of Uninhabited land would agree to this proposition.
I dont buy that Japan/Indonesia and all are not landforms but basically Lava deposited over the years. What is the argument for your hypothesis?

      • Narendra 10:36 pm on March 14, 2011 Permalink | Reply

Moving to other nations would be their last resort..esp in case of nuclear explosion, the atmosphere over Japan would be contaminated for years..People wud suffer as they did during d WW II bombings..

As of the geology part…Dad is a Phd in geology..we can safely assume he has got his facts right 😛

rajiv…narendra wud be right…igneous rocks (its sth like that, learnt it in school waaaay back), which are basically just cooled down lava, which then cools down and gives u islands like japan . indonesia etc. makes sense, theres a ring of volcanoes in that region.

          naren why a nuclear disaster?

Hmmm…guess u not tracking the news..Nuclear power plant is on the verge of a meltdown..which could lead to massive radiation..entire Japan will be doomed, Korea might face issues as well. Read this

no im not to be honest 😦 when i leave the house the newspaper hasnt come in yet, and when i come back its been trashed…..im not one for online news, so i just hear abt odd snippets here and there at night. thats how bad i am 😦

will this have implications for other countries? or just those in the region?

              • Narendra 8:00 pm on March 15, 2011 Permalink | Reply

Of Course, if there’s a meltdown, effects of radiation will be felt in China, S Korea, N Korea, Philippines. As of now the situation is getting worse..hope for the best

Japanese Stay away from India…Your brains will be corrupted by the Indian politicians and that damage will be huge than a nuclear pollution.

    Ring of Fire

    Pacific Ring of Fire

    Image via Wikipedia

By now, we all must have seen the clippings of massive Tsunami waves ripping apart Japan. In 2004, there was a similar quake in S.E.Asia which killed close to 0.25 million people. After watching todays visuals, I couldn’t help re-collecting the conversation I had with my dad after that 2004 quake. Dad is a Geologist, and he studies rock sediments, fossils, tectonic plates, etc. We rarely have conversations related to his work, in fact I am not sure about his job profile or nature of his work. Anyways, on that day we were watching some news on that weeks Tsunami and he said. “This is just a beginning“. Lot of people say that ” Ahh,god is angry”, “End of days”, “I said so” but, this man has a scientific background and he knew exactly what he was saying based on the studies and research that has been going on for decades.

He was trying to explain how earthquakes are generated and the physics behind it. And, then he said something very interesting which most of us may not be aware. Earth has reset itself 5 times since its inception, one of which wiped out the Dinosaurs and that was the last of the 5 factory resets.

Ok, what is relevant is more to us is, in coming decades we’re likely to experience more of such quakes combined with Tsunami and Volcanic eruptions. The pacific belt, which is also known as “Ring of fire” will see lot more seismic activity. It’s bad news for people living in that belt especially, for folks in west half of America. LA, SF are in the firing line. It’s said that a potential killer quake is round the corner. Japan, Philippines, Indonesia, and other pacific Islands face grave danger as well [ in fact that’s been the case for ages ]. And, then he said something which made me feel better. Geological data is mapped  in millions of years [ that’s there unit of measure 😛 ]. So, we may not be around to watch the  extinction however, we will witness several major calamities in the next few decades as the tectonic activity has become stronger than before. I hope my dad’s words don’t come true simply because geological predictions are only 50% accurate 😀 [ and, they get paid for making these half predictions ]

So be good and try to stay away from the pacific belt. If you live in that part of the world, just pray for the best.

I just became aware of the earthquake today. I have the TV on CNN now. It’s so scary! I’m worried for my families in the Philippines.
I’m praying for those people who’ve lost their lives in Japan. Too sad!
It’s neat that your dad is a geologist..he has a better grasp on what’s happening to our earth.

Yes, sad.. l hope ur families are safe n sound..
Philippines too gets hit by quakes, Volcanoes, Floods etc right…sad..I remember watching the floods of 2009 in Television…so scary..Idun think I Wud never want to live in Islands..tht too in ring of fire..no way 😦

eesh…it was terrible to hear abt it…think abt it this way: japan is a country where these occurences are very common and they are very well prepared to deal with it. imagine what devestation would happen in countries which are not so well prepared. imagine: the AFTERSHOCKS were of magnitude 6.0…so u can imagine how terrible the earthquake itself must be.

arent there volcanoes in this area as well?

        • Narendra 11:14 am on March 12, 2011 Permalink | Reply

Oh yes..plenty of Volcanoes..esp in the deep seas..Pacific is one of the most volatile zones on Earth..

all the countries in that belt hav no choice at all.. no preparation can save them..

            god help th
does yr dad know why there has been an increase in these natural disasters over the past few years? every yr we have an earthquake now, then we have floods and tsunamis and even an eruption i think in 2009…?

            • Narendra 6:47 pm on March 12, 2011 Permalink | Reply

he said it’s just a normal movement of continental plates…nothing to do with pollution or othr human evils…hmmm..not in our control

Hope and pray that the casualties of earthquake and tsunami are less in Japan. It is really a big disaster for a country which is the most prepared for any earthquake. Our prayers are for the victims and impacted in Japan and other places where the tsunami is likely.

No preparation can save any nation from nature’s fury..however, Japan is a specialist at disaster management and recovery…One of my frnd works thr…he said they will be up and running in weeks if not days..Pls pray for all

wow insightful topic Narendra. The good news is that we won’t be there to see the massive Factory Reset. but the bad news is that we are observing and facing the prototypes like what happened in japan 😐 My sympathies for the ppl of Japan
